I wrote this article for Bob Pointer at http://www.bodylanguagelearning.org.uk/ and I thought I would share it here as well. Bob is an expert in non-verbal communication and I strongly suggest checking out his website and what he offers:
“Everybody’s talking at me, but I don’t hear a word they’re saying!”
There is a song by Harry Nilsson back in the singer-songwriter era of the 1960’s in the United States called Everybody’s Talkin’. The lyrics start off; “Everybody's talking at me, but I don't hear a word they're saying, only the echoes of my mind.” It’s a nice mellow song, and be thankful this post is text-based so I can’t sing it for you! What’s interesting is that those words are more insightful than Harry realized because this is true in much of communication today as well; everybody’s talking but they don’t hear a word that they’re saying. Maybe that’s because they aren’t only talking with their words! Yes, our words communicate a lot of information, much more than people even realize, and we can gain significant insight from analyzing language. However our bodies communicate as well, consciously and subconsciously. The problem is that most people don’t pay attention to the cues available to them and ignore them or they may not even see them at all, or if they do see them they may misinterpret them due to false information, improper training or folklore. The information is available for everyone to see because our bodies are always “talking”; you just need the right training to identify it properly and then use that information to focus your questioning. “Body Language Learning” provides communication skills and training for people who want to be more effective in their communication and improve their ability to identify, understand and use body language more effectively.
Now treat yourself to the song...not by me, but by Harry, and click below.
